Banfield Plate Final  29th April 2010 at Barnstaple Con Club

Liberal A are the new holders of the Banfield Plate, proving too strong for their opponents, South Molton Con A, running out 3-1 winners.

Paul Steed took the first frame with a well-timed 23 break after a scrappy opening to the frame.  In the next Kevin Bastable levelled for the Molton side, but comfortable victories for both Tony Babb and Kevin Lock ensured success for the Liberal team.

Knockout Plate Final  27th April 2010 at South Molton Con  Club

In a dramatic contest lasting almost 4 hours, Jackpots are the new Plate winners.

In the first frame, a very determined Jackpots skipper, Chris Brown just failed to overhaul Tim Southon, losing by 4 points.  The second frame saw a strangely lacklustre performance from Jack Brown, succumbing to some excellent potting from Ross Maynard who triumphed by 23 points.

Frame three and a magnificent performance from Dom Stacey, who, wven though receiving 43 start from Mark Heafield, still ran out a deserved winner by 118-59.  A battling potting competition in the fourth frame resulted in a black ball win by Martin Phillpotts over James Middlemass.

This put Jackpots 39 ahead going into the final frame which was beginning to look a formality for the Liberal Club side. But they reckoned without the sheer determination of Phil Richard against John White.  Aided by a superb 24 break, Phil pulled back the deficit so that the teams were level on aggregate at the brown. He potted the brown, White took the blue and pink, leaving Richard needing the black to force the tie. He did, which meant a re-spotted black to decide the winners. Richard won the toss and put White in to break. A nerve jangling exchange of shots until eventually White potted the black at the thirteenth attempt to great acclaim from both teams for a wonderful match.

Half Term report 2009 / 10

Christmas is over and we look forward to the second half of the season.  I hope everyone had a super Christmas and I wish you all a very Happy New Year.

First on the agenda will be the Cup Finals.

The Knockout Cup Final will be between League leaders Misfits and England 7 to be played at Barnstaple Con Club on 5th January.

The Vickers Cup Final will feature two Liberal Club teams, Spurs and Nutters and will be played at the Legion Club on 7th January.

Good luck to all involved !

At this stage the League leaders are Misfits on 38 points, with South Molton Con A only three points behind on 35.

Ten teams are then bunched on between 31 and 27 points, leaving Con Cues as the strongest team holding up everyone else on 21.

Misfits must be particularly pleased to have gone halfway only losing three games, and those three by a close 3-2 margin. Three players stand out as doing particularly well – Dave Brayley with 8 wins from 11, John Gaydon with 7 wins from 8 and Mitch Wood (a shrewd signing from Legion) with 5 wins from 8. Newcomer Matt Pincombe also looks very useful, having won 6 of his 11 games.

South Molton Con A are not far behind thanks largely to the efforts of Bernie Warr with 7 wins from 10 and consistent performances from the rest of the team.

Four teams share third position on 31 points:

England 7 with strong performances from Greg Moyse and Ross Toleman,  Legion Cues – a good first half from Dean Lewis,  Liberal A – Dave George, John Selby, Paul Steed and Kevin Lock all lowering their handicaps,  and South Molton Con C with sterling efforts from Steve Tucker and the veterans Don Harrison and Gilbert Gunn.

On 30 points we have defending chapions Fort Chiefs whose players were considerably penalised by last season’s success, but it would no surprise to see them pick up again in the second half. Also on 30 points are South Molton Con B.  Danny Bain has been their star with 9 wins from 11, skipper Lewis Hutter also contributing 7 wins.

Spurs have blown hot and cold this year, but both Dale Carpenter and Lenny Palmer have enjoyed good results towards the 29 points.

On 28 points we have Magnets who should improve in the second half, and surprisingly Nutters who have not enjoyed as much as could have been anticipated, although both Steve Coles and Nick Kenny have scored heavily.  Skipper Darren Horsman currently holds the highest league break of 62.

At the foot of the table on 21 are Con Cues, but they must take comfort from their performance as at this time last year they had only managed 7 points. Having opened with two wins, luck deserted them until the final match of the half when they won 4-1.

If anyone has any comments or suggestions, I am usually available and would be pleased to hear from you.

Knockout Plate Final  5th May 2009 at Liberal Club

A fascinating contest brought together England 7 and South Molton Con A, both having shared the honours by 3-2 in their respective League matches.

The opening frame produced a comfortable win by Bob Lambell over Dan Moore whose luck was certainly against him. A lead of 42 points for SMCA.

The second frame had a determined Eric Arnold overcome an early deficit to beat Ross Toleman by 13, increasing the A team lead to 55.

Kevin Bastable now had to face England 7 captain Phil Jewell and found that giving 50 start to his opponent was too much, as Phil impressively powered to a 37 point win, reducing the lead to 18.

A team skipper Syd Warren got the better of Mike Jewell to win by 13, leaving anchor man Bernie Warr to defend a 31 point lead for SMCA against Greg Moyse for England 7 in the final frame.

An 18 point handicap start gave control to Bernie, and Greg was unable to peg back the necessary score, eventually capitulating on the colours.

Final score:  England 7  206    South Molton Con A  252

MAGNETS SEAL VICKERS CUP VICTORY - Report by Bob Lambell

Magnets    3      Spurs    2

In a topsy-turvy match, with three of the five frames going against the expected results had handicaps been applied, Magnets triumphed 3-2 over Spurs in this Cup Final tie which went to the wire.

With all players off scratch, the first frame provided a win for Garth Whitcomb over Sean Lewis, putting Magnets into an early lead – only for Darren Horsman to level the match with victory over League President Dave Woolley.

Spurs skipper Mike Bray then lost to Dave Ingersent who had a magnificent clearance of 25.  The match was again levelled by Micky Lewis, comfortably beating the reigning singles champion Nick Kenny.

The deciding frame brought together Alastair McClure for Spurs against Magnets captain Rodney Winkles, the Magnets man securing the all important final frame.

CUES TRIUMPH IN KNOCKOUT CUP MARATHON - Report by Bob Lambell

Legion Cues have beaten League leaders Fort Chiefs in the Knockout Cup Final after a match lasting almost four hours.

Charlie Marks was the first winner for Cues, potting the final two colours brilliantly for a 25 point lead.  Tim Southon replied for Chiefs with a 21 point success following a dour struggle against veteran Tony Lewis. So at this stage, a slender 4 point margin in favour of Cues.

James Middlemass at times displayed some awesome potting in taking the next frame by 22, but must now be ruing the opportunity to lay an easy snooker following a fluked red which could have boosted his winning margin.  Chiefs now ahead by 18.

Another safety orientated frame followed with Colin James (Cues) eventually securing a 7 point success to bring the aggregate back to 11 in favour of the Braunton side.

The final frame saw Chiefs skipper Trevor Naish paired with Dean Lewis for Cues, giving his opponent a 17 point handicap start. Excellent potting by the Cues man left Naish struggling for snookers, before finally succumbing by 45, giving Legion Cues the eventual winning margin of 34.

Final result: Fort Chiefs 267  Legion Cues 301.

Half Term report - By Bob Lambell

Christmas is over and we look forward to the second half of the season.  I hope everyone had a super Christmas and I wish you all a very Happy New Year.

First on the agenda will be the Cup Finals.

The knockout Cup Final will be between League leaders Fort Chiefs and Legion Cues to be played at South Molton on 6th January.

The Vickers Cup Final will feature two Liberal Club teams, Spurs and Magnets and will be played at the Liberal Club on 13th January.

Good luck to all involved !

At this stage the League leaders are Fort Chiefs on 41 points, with Jackpots only two points behind on 39.

Nine teams are then bunched on between 34 and 28 points, with newcomers Misfits slightly adrift on 22, leaving South Molton D as the strongest team holding up everyone else on 7.

Chiefs must be particularly pleased to have gone halfway only losing one game (to England 7). Three players stand out as doing particularly well – James Middlemass (9 wins and 8 breaks 20 & over), Phil Richard (8 wins out of 9) and Tim Southon (8 wins out of 11).

Jackpots are not far behind thanks mainly to the efforts of Chris and Jack Brown, Jon White and the so far unbeaten Martin Phillpotts with 7 straight wins.

South Molton A sit comfortably in third place, having been joined this year by both Bob Lambell and Bernie Warr from the old B team.

They have each contributed  8 wins out of 11.

England 7, South Molton C and Spurs are tied in fourth place.

For England 7 good first halves from both Mike Jewell and newcomer Ross Toleman have boosted their performance.

South Molton C have strength in depth, with vice-captain Don Harrison doing particularly well.

Spurs have Andy Horton continuing to improve – now down to 23.

Liberal A on 7th place must be disappointed, none more so than Tony Babb who was undefeated until the last match, having had a run of 9 wins and a walkover.

Fort House and Magnets are not having the best of times, nor are Legion Cues although they have battled through to the Knockout Cup Final.

South Molton B are an all new team from last year and have had some good successes, even though they are third from bottom on 28.

Total newcomers Misfits should be encouraged, having had three wins, and should be helped by their increased handicaps.

The same applies to wooden spoon candidates South Molton D who have had a nightmare start, losing all their games. Skipper Howard Jefferies has three wins from their total of 7 points. They really must concentrate on fielding a full team for the back half of the season.

If anyone has any comments or suggestions, I am usually available and would be pleased to hear from you.
